Know Your (Governors) Road

By Adam Pettengell, in Uncategorized

How important is you road name? I’ll be honest I’ve seen a few road names in my time and I’ve heard a few stories about people’s previous road names (good and bad…and sometimes a little odd). Would a road name stop you buying a home though? Not at Governors! The roads at Governors are a bit special as they are named after our previous Governors of Delaware!

History lives in your road name at Governors and I think that’s a bit special, right? Not only can you tell people you live East of Route 1 and on Gills Neck Road, but you can also go on to say what your Governor did for the new state you are going to live in.  Pretty cool right?  Let’s check out the roads that are open in our initial town home and single family phases.

Causey Road is named after the one and only Governor Peter Foster Causey and will be home to the initial townhome phase at Governors.  Let’s take a look at Peter and see what we can learn:

Mr. Causey was elected Governor in 1855 and served four years in office. A member of the Whig party, during his tenure he dealt with the passage of an act that eliminated life tenure in office.  He left office on January 18, 1859, and later served as president of the Junction and Breakwater Railroad. Governor Peter F. Causey died on February 15, 1871, and is buried at the Old Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Milford, Delaware. He seems like a good chap.  Married with six kiddos (wowzer that’s a lot!). Causey is also very interesting as there is a Causey Mansion in Milford which is now a bed & breakfast. Stop by for a visit sometime;)

The most well-known historic home in Milford, Delaware also just so happens to be the Causey Mansion, which sits on a triangle of land at the intersection of South Walnut Street, Causey Avenue (formally known as Depot Street) and South East 2nd Street. The mansion’s yellow brick exterior has been a Milford landmark for centuries, ever since 1855, when Governor Peter F. Causey remodeled the home to how it looks today. The home is in the Greek Revival style with French accents, such as window caps and detailed grill-work in the small third-story windows.  Before being owned by Governor Causey, the mansion was home to another Delaware Governor, Daniel Rogers, who was originally from Virginia. One unique aspect of the Causey Mansion is a well-preserved slave quarters.  The outbuilding served as shelter for the house servants, with one lower room with a brick floor and a large fireplace.

Next up, Halset Road! Haslet Road is named after Governor Joseph Haslet and is home to the first phase of single-family home sites in Governors.  Fun fact: it was SOLD OUT even before the Grand Opening of the community!  Pretty amazing right? Let’s take a look at Joe:

Governor Haslet was the first person to serve a second non-consecutive term as governor of Delaware. He was born in Kent County, near Milford, Delaware, in 1769. After his parent’s deaths, Haslet was left under the guardianship of Chief Justice William Killen. He received a private education, and at the age of 21 he moved to Cedar Creek Hundred in Sussex County, where he engaged in farming. On October 2, 1810, he was victorious and became Delaware’s Governor. During his tenure, the Farmers’ Bank of the State of Delaware was founded, the state militia was restructured, and a number of war resolutions were passed by the legislature. Haslet did not seek reelection due to the 1792 Delaware Constitution, which banned a governor from succeeding himself. He left office on January 18, 1814, and returned to his farming interests. On October 1, 1822, Haslet won reelection to the governor’s office, and on January 21, 1823, he was sworn into office again. During this term, Haslet granted several pardons and made numerous key commission appointments. Governor Joseph Haslet passed away while still in office, on June 20, 1823. He is buried at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Milford, Delaware. Governor Halset was a Democratic-Republican and was married with one kiddo. Interesting fact about Governor Haslet was that he was the only person to date to run for Governor 4 times (being successful twice)!

Now you know the roads you are going to live on.  Pretty neat right? Lewes is full of history that you are going to love, and so will Governors.  Even better, you can cycle to all of these historical places in Lewes!  Stay tuned as we release where our next phases will be and the history behind those road names as well!

Meet Your Neighbors: Janice & Troy

By Adam Pettengell, in Uncategorized

We’re back! And we’re kicking off the week with another glimpse at the backbone of this community – our homeowners! This time we’ve caught up with Janice and Troy, who will be building a lovely Jasmine here at Governors. Welcome Janice and Troy!

Tell us a bit about yourselves and your current situation?

We have 3 children (2 boys and a girl) and 3 grandchildren (2 girls and a boy). We have an 11-year-old Morkie(Maltese/Yorkie) named Buddy.  We live in York Pennsylvania and it takes us about 3 hours and 15 minutes to drive to the community.

Troy is a manufacturing business owner and Janice is an Operating Room nurse.  We just celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary!

How did you hear/know about Lewes and the beach?

We have been visiting the Rehoboth and Lewes area for decades staying in a local campground or renting a house.

Why did you pick Governors as your new home community?

We like the idea of a community where we could meet new people. The location of Governors is great with the bike trails and close proximity to the beach.  The fact that it is closer to home compared to other places is definitely a plus.  Troy first saw it on Facebook!

Why did you pick your floor plan this floor plan?

This floor plan will accommodate our family when they visit. We also liked the main living area design.

What do you look forward to the most once you live in your new home in Governors?

We are looking forward to exploring Lewes and all of the things it has to offer.  We can’t wait to get together with our new neighbors.  It was nice being able to meet so many of them in June.  Unfortunately we can’t live there full time until we retire.

Meet Your Neighbors: Alli & Mike

By Adam Pettengell, in Uncategorized

We’re back for round 2! Mike and Alli League are in the hot seat and they’re answering all of our questions so that you can get to know them. After all, they could be your future neighbors at Governors!

Tell us a bit about yourselves and your current situation?

Mike & Alli League, the cute Orchid on Lot #199.  It’s just us and our fun-loving pup, Mac. Alli is a veterinary technician at Savannah Animal Hospital and Mike is an instructional technology coach for the Indian River School District.

How did you hear/know about Lewes and the beach?

Our love affair with Lewes began in the summer of 2001, the same summer we started dating.  Mike got an internship at the College of Marine Studies and spent 10 glorious weeks doing “research” at the beach, while staying in the UD dorm in Cape Henlopen State Park.  Alli got a summer job at the University of Delaware in Newark, and would spend weekends down in Lewes. Between the wonderful coastal lifestyle, the amazing landscape, and the incredibly nice people we were hooked.  In 2003, we made Southern Delaware our home, even getting married on Lewes Beach! The last 17 years have been about finding reasons to stay close to Lewes.

Why did you pick Governors as your new home community?

Governors checks so many boxes for us: close to the beach, the bike path, and Second Street.  When we thought carefully about our lifestyle and where we were spending our free time, it seemed the perfect fit.  We were also looking for a quality, efficient house, so we studied a lot of local builders carefully. (Alli has dragged Mike into more than his fair share of “under construction” homes.)  Alli’s parents built with Schell Brothers and we’ve watched them really enjoy their community (Independence). The low-maintenance lifestyle with great neighbors sealed the deal.

Why did you pick your floor plan at Governors?

We previously had the big house with the big lawn and all the maintenance that comes with it.  In Governors, we were looking for something a little smaller, with the space in the right places.  The Orchid is perfect for us with its awesome kitchen, master suite, and two-car garage. We don’t need a lot of extra bedrooms as both sets of our parents have followed us to Sussex County and retired in the area, so we’re converting one to a study.  Adding the screened porch and some extra room in the garage makes it just perfect for us.

What do you look forward to the most once you live in your new home in Governors?

There are too many things to name here.  Walk to the Farmers’ Market or take Mac for a walk and grab coffee downtown? Should we hit the bike path for a ride or head down to Cape Henlopen? Maybe we’ll read a book at the pool or spend a lazy afternoon on the screened porch.  Dinner out or share a meal (and a few beers) with some neighbors? Every day is a new adventure, and that’s what we’re looking forward to the most in Governors.

Stay tuned for more friendly faces in our next post in the series!

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

By Adam Pettengell, in Uncategorized

It is fundamentally important to Natalie and I that we build Governors from the inside out.  The success of the community doesn’t start or end with the Jeeps in the car park or the amazing trailer we’ve set up shop in at the entrance (although we have a lot of fun entertaining you all in both).  Nope, the success hinges entirely on the people in the community.

Governors started with a serious bang, but what became immediately apparent at our Grand Opening Celebration was that we had an amazing group of homeowners amongst us. It’s this same group that will serve as the backbone of Governors – the true heart of the community. This first event provided our shiny new homeowners with the chance to mix and mingle. Not only that, these fine folks started to form friendships that will surely last a lifetime. And at that moment, the community was born!

Governors is already making the headlines, BUT thats not all that’s attention-worthy. We want to highlight some of the stories of the initial bunch of homeowners whom have completed our extreme vetting process;) It’s not for the faint of heart, but the tried and true made it through and we couldn’t be happier about the community that’s forming here at Governor’s. It’s truly something special!

And without further ado…we introduce you our newest blog series, “Meet Your Future Neighbors.” First up, Dave and Suzanne!

Tell us a bit about yourselves and your current situation?

We live in North Wilmington & have 3 children & currently 3 grandchildren 😉. Right now we have a townhouse in Heritage Village, but our goal was to be on the “other” side of Route 1 in a beautiful community.

How did you hear/know about Lewes and the beach?

We have been coming to the Delaware beaches for many years & when we were able to purchase a 2nd home we knew it had to be in Lewes!

Why did you pick Governors as your new home community?

Occasionally we would visit different Schell communities & loved both the homes & finishes. We had heard about Governors 3 years ago & were just waiting for it to be started.

Why did you pick your floor plan at Governors?

The moment we walked into a Jasmine we knew it was the one for us. We loved the floor plan, the openness of the first floor, and how it would allow us a great entertaining flow.

What do you look forward to the most once you live in your new home in Governors?

Being part of a wonderful community; the ability to walk/ride bikes into town if need be.

Sounds great guys.  Thank you for contributing to the community. We’re lucky to have you as part of the community.  Let the good times roll!

Resort Life is Now a Reality at Coastal Club!

By Adam Pettengell, in Coastal Club

Coastal Club
Coastal Club has been open for sales since February 2015, and what a whirlwind it’s been since the launch date! The community started as all communities do, with a grand plan and a vision for a beautiful community that would one day come to fruition.
For Coastal Club, the plan hinged largely on the vision for resort living in Lewes, Delaware, something which incidentally hadn’t been done before in an area this close to the much sought after Lewes zip code.  To be 5 miles from downtown Lewes and have the luxury of an amenity-rich community is a pretty awesome combination… and our homeowners soon agreed. As of today Schell Brothers at Coastal Club has SOLD 175 homes!
I know you’re thinking how fast our sister community Senators sold out, but believe it or not, Coastal Club is breaking all the records.  To boot, we now have our clubhouse open, along with our outdoor pools, our amazing swim-up bar, and party deck!
I documented the build like I do with our homes at Coastal Club and put together a few videos.  I hope you agree that something this amazing needs to be shown off.  It started as a plan but now, it’s a reality. Take a look at the progress!
For a short video of the Swimming pool progress: click here. And for the clubhouse progress: click here
With activities and classes now popping up, The Lighthouse Club is evolving into the social scene it was built for.  Having Big Fish Grill handling the food and drink makes it pretty neat to drop in there as well;) The steel drum playing every Saturday 2-4pm, well, that’s just the icing on the cake.  As we say at the Club, every day is a vacation!
I think the big thing I’ve noticed compared to other communities I’ve worked in is that the Lighthouse Club is well used. The gym is active, already the tennis and pickleball courts are bustling, and I saw some solid bocce ball action this last weekend. It’s active here folks and that’s what people want when they move down to the beach. The party deck is always busy, it’s a little sun trap up there (a rather dangerous trap in fact, as the drinks can fly back very quickly). And again having Big Fish cook the food for the swim-up bar means that people don’t have to go far as the food on-site is simply amazing.
Come on down and I’ll show you for real.  The videos are great but there is nothing like the real thing!
Resort living….vacation life…. every day.
Interested in paying us a visit? Stop by! We’re here 7-days a week.

The Power of Natural Gas!

By Adam Pettengell, in All Communities

People ask me all the time about the power of natural gas, so what better time than now to bring you all up to speed on this incredible heat source available in our community here at Coastal Club. Natural gas is an accessory that is relatively new in the beach area.  In fact, depending on your location, most new communities are connecting with this power source, and truth be told, the difference between propane and natural gas is a game changer for new home homeowners.
I’ll speak from experience first. My family and I went from a twin home of around 2700 sq. ft. to a single-family floor plan touching 4000 sq. ft.  The twin home had propane, and the single-family home carries natural gas.  My bills (remember now that I have two kids, a wife and a dog in that order) actually went down in the bigger floor plan! No, we didn’t change our lifestyle, the kids still have to shower 5 times a day it seems and the Mrs. always keeps the heat up throughout the day, much to my chagrin. I’m saving anywhere from $50-150 per month and I’m in a bigger home.  I still pinch myself.
At Coastal Club, I talk to a lot of people from out of state, and usually with older homes, and they’re staggered by the numbers I give them for my gas and electric bills. I even documented my first year’s natural gas bills to help you understand what your costs are going to be in your new Schell home:

January ’16 $146.92
February $148.04
March $120.75
April $94.32
May $73.82
June $47.66
July $46.34
August $48.28
September $47.00
October $55.32
November $106.98
December $141.54
 Monthly Average $89.7475

Remember most home owners aren’t building 4,000 sq. ft. houses and are averaging around the 2600-3000 sq. ft.,  SO that would mean that all things being equal, your natural gas will be even lower.  With the Schellter Technology and Advanced Building Science used to build each home, you can rest assured you’re going to have more money in your pocket.
What will you spend that extra money on? More trips to Agave? More ice cream at Hopkins Creamery? Travel more?
When you add to the fact we were lucky enough to have solar panels with Clean Energy USA added to our home, and as a result, paid under $400 in total for electric in 2016,  I’m a happy chap.  The great thing is you can achieve both these feats with a Schell Brothers home.  The knowledge of monthly utility bills averaging around $125 a month just gives me huge peace of mind.  How much is peace of mind worth to you?

The Power of Nantucket! Now Selling in Coastal Club.

By Adam Pettengell, in Coastal Club

No not Nantucket, New England, we’re talking about Nantucket, the neighborhood, that recently opened here at Coastal Club! Nantucket is our fourth neighborhood to open at Coastal Club, after successfully selling Provincetown, North Tisbury and Oak Bluffs..and that’s with Coastal Club only launching sales in February of 2015!
So, what’s so new about Nantucket?? Well…everything!
For starters, this new phase is like no other phase in Coastal Club.  Its entrance is tucked away off of the natural walking trail and will include a bridge entrance over the wetlands.  This section is teeming with mature trees, both on the perimeter of the phase and internally as well, providing the perfect amount of privacy. Nantucket will also contain amazing ponds, with some water views of Gosslee Mill Pond, our natural water source at the back of the community.
So you have to cross the pond, see what I did there, to get to the new phase;) In fact, from the ring road that goes around Coastal Club, you can’t even see it.  It’s super exclusive, super private, and super quiet, BUT you still have direct and easy access to the trail and the amenities.
That’s all well and good, but there’s still more!  There are basement homesites in the phase (and obviously natural gas heat source) which means you’ll have trees, ponds, water views AND those coveted basements that so many of you have been asking about. All that has meant that the neighborhood, even in its infancy, opened in June 2017 with a staggering 20 contracts.
Currently there are no roads, as we are in the early phases of site work, but you can access the neighborhood by going off-road in my Jeep! Are you ready to jump in and see what I’m talking about?
With first deliveries slated for summer/fall 2018, homeowners can lock in today’s prices while maintaining the security of knowing they’re a year out until the home is theirs, giving them plenty of time to sell their homes and prepare for the move. That means you’ll have ample time to get everything squared away for this exciting chapter of your life!
Are you ready to join the Club? Contact me today, or pop over to our model home at 31611 Exeter Way
Lewes, DE 19958, for a visit and a tour of the community. I’ll have the Jeep ready and waiting for you!

Local’s Corner: Parkmobile at the Beach

By Adam Pettengell, in Coastal Club

Parkmobile
I remember those days…the days of scrambling to find quarters in your car so I could park at the beach.  Do you remember??  I could’ve been on 2nd Street in Lewes or approaching Rehoboth Ave and my blood pressure would start going up as the knowledge that I hadn’t saved enough quarters in the off-season started creeping in. Arrrrrrgh!  You get out of the car and then blindly walk around trying to break a note into quarters.  My friends, I am glad to report that those days are gone thanks to Parkmobile.

At the beach, in both Lewes and Rehoboth, you will now find that Parkmobile is your new best friend.  This handy app allows you to pay for parking on your phone – not a single quarter needed!  Now, I should note that you have the option to pay via credit card in Rehoboth if you don’t have the app BUT I’m all for the app.  It’s faster, easier, and so much more convenient.

So how does it work? The process is really quite simple.  First things first, sign up for Parkmobile. Next, you’ll need to add the app to your cell.  Finally, when you park all you need is your parking zone number (and sometimes your parking space number).  The hardest decision is how long you want to park for, but on most parking spots you can extend your time if needed.

The beauty is you can also add multiple cars to your app.   It can even locate your car (which believe me, can be a real lifesaver!). Another bonus – if you go get distracted with the amazing amount of stimuli at the beach then your app will send you text messages to remind you that your parking is running out.  No need to set your clock or be constantly looking for a clock at every shop, bar, or restaurant.  Fifteen minutes before the end of your session you’ll be promptly reminded.  Pretty cool right? It really does make you stop and think about how we were able to survive before technology evolved and pulled us out of the despair of quarter scrounging.

Of course, during the winter months, paid parking is far from our minds as many of the meters enjoy hibernation until summer, but nonetheless Memorial Day Weekend will be here soon enough and with it will come the peace of mind Parkmobile.

Check out the video below and then download the app.  It’s a game changer for life at the beach!

Local’s Corner – Pampering Your Pet at Groomingdales

By Adam Pettengell, in Coastal Club

Local's Corner
Where would we be without our four legged friends?? Especially given how many of you would be quick to correct me and say “four-legged children“.  Our homeowners will gladly attest to the fact that Lewes is an incredibly dog-friendly location, as are all the Delaware Beaches for that matter. Between the walking trails, the local dog parks, the beach, and the dog-friendly businesses, you’ll that find you and your dog acclimate quickly to life in Coastal Delaware.  Personally, I was amazed at how true this was when I first came to the area.  Best dressed pet costumes during the Sea Witch parade, Greyhound Weekend in Dewey, Yappy Hours in Lewes, and so the list goes…

Of course I also know what a dog-friendly community Coastal Club is and feel fortunate that I get to see our resident furry friends regularly as they explore the community with their loyal owners.  Allowing fences around the rear of the property and having an on-site dog park as part of our amazing amenity package are just a few of the reasons pet-lovers chose Coastal Club.

While it is comforting to know that your dog will enjoy your new home just as much you do, it can also put a few kinks in their normal routine. Just as losing your hairdresser or dentist when relocating to the beach can cause anxiety, having to find a new groomer for your pet can be difficult for both you and your pet. When we take our pets to be groomed we want them to be taken care of and given the proper treatment (full pampering, a little R&R, and lots of love, right??). Well, at Groomingdale’s you get the comfort of knowing your pet is in good hands and will get the best treatment and care.  How do I know this?  Well, my beloved Griffin Elizabeth goes there! Alexia Millan, the owner, takes excellent care of her, so much so that I recommend her constantly. Alexia has genuine affection for dogs, which is immediately evident the moment she greets your pet at the door, and proven further with the top-notch grooming she performs.  Just like my children, I would never place Griffin Elizabeth in an establishment that I didn’t think had her best interests in mind.

Alexia offers a wide array of affordable, high-quality, pet grooming services, including baths, haircuts, teeth/nail/ear care and more in her state-of-the-art facility.  Groomingdale’s also hosts a walk-in wellness clinic from 4 to 6 p.m. every Monday. The wellness clinic is an affordable one-stop-shop for pets’ vaccines, heartworm testing and microchipping.

I can wholeheartedly refer Groomingdale’s and Alexia to you with complete confidence that you and your four-legged children are in the best of hands.

Local’s Corner – Atkins & Sons Firewood

By Adam Pettengell, in Uncategorized

Local's Corner
With cold weather in the mix for the foreseeable future, making sure your fireplace needs are taken care of is of paramount importance! After all, there is nothing better in the winter and spring months than heading outside to start up a fire on your courtyard.  Let’s face it, it doesn’t really matter what the season is, fireside chats are always a welcome invitation for family and friends.  I had my outdoor fire going all day on Christmas Day and Boxing Day – and it was spectacular.  I love my house, particularly my courtyard, so I can say without hesitation that the best decision I ever made was adding our outdoor fireplace.  The dancing flames, the children making s’mores, and forging lasting memories outside with the family are just a few reasons why the outdoor fireplace has proven to be a terrific investment in our lives.

Now, even with our stellar fireplace in tact, I still needed a contact in place for when it was time to stock up on firewood.  I would never want to have that nightmare scenario when it was perfect afternoon or evening for an outdoor fire and I didn’t have any wood available. I’m shaking just typing that…no firewood! Nightmare. It’s happened…but I don’t want it to ever happen again. But we don’t want just any contact in place – we want that reliable, there-when-you-need him contact who can deliver firewood at a moment’s notice. John is that contact.  John Atkins owns a family-run company that you may or may not be familiar with called Atkins & Sons Firewood & Mulch and he has never let me down.
Located in Dagsboro, Atkins firewood is available either for you to pick up or they’ll deliver to your door step.  Fancy a cord or half a cord? He’ll make it happen.  I recently went through my half cord I had purchased from John a year ago! That’s how good the wood was and all at a great price with excellent service.  John and his team can drop off the wood and they can stack it for you. On my most recent endeavor, I called up John and within 24 hours I had my firewood level restored and my hands itching to start up another fire!
What I’ve realized in life is that it’s these contacts that are so important to have in place. For me, there’s no greater resource than tapping into a local businesses who provides you with great service. Atkins & Sons Firewood is one of those valuable resources. Not only will you receive great service, you’ll make a contact for life!

Think local first + Buy local when you can = Being a local!

Cheers, Adam
