Green Partner of the Year for 2011

By Schell Brothers, in All Communities

Schell Brothers Recognized as NAHB Research Center
Green Partner of the Year for 2011
Local Builder Applauded for Excellence in Advancing
High-Performance Mainstream Home Building

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware March 26, 2012
– Schell Brothers has been named an NAHB Research Center Green Partner of the Year for 2011. Being one of only a handful of the Research Center’s Green Certification participants to be honored with this award validates the commitment Schell Brothers has made to provide its Delaware customers with increased value, comfort, durability, and efficiency through its Green Certified homes.

“This is the first year since the Research Center began offering certification services to the ICC-700 National Green Building Standard that we have presented awards to our program partners,” said Research Center President Michael Luzier. “After administering the program for three years, we felt compelled to recognize the significant commitment to green certification, innovation in building science, and leadership in the residential construction industry that our partners have displayed. We are awed by what companies like Schell Brothers are achieving in the field and the market transformation they are accomplishing through a voluntary, market-driven program.”

In 2011, Schell Brothers constructed 29 homes in Sussex County that were Green Certified by the Research Center to the National Green Building Standard. These certified homes include energy and resource-conserving features such as 16 SEER air conditioners, variable speed blowers, Rinnai tankless water heaters, specially sealed ducts, and proprietary techniques.  The company places an important emphasis on educating their customers and homeowners on the benefits of high performance features, from the interactive displays placed in their model homes to their pre-construction orientation and walk through procedures. Schell Brothers is committed to providing a comfortable and healthy home to their buyers.

“We’ve created a standard package that produces a superior home in regard to energy, indoor air quality, moisture management and durability.  New home shoppers should always ask builders to provide their average Home Energy Rating Score (HERS).  Our current average is 52, and that’s well below a typical new home at 100.  In the end, a lower HERS score will result in reduced utility costs along with a home that provides superior comfort,” said Mark Fitzgerald, Vice President of Construction at Schell Brothers.

To earn certification to the National Green Building Standard, a home must meet rigorous criteria in six categories – Lot & Site Development; Resource Efficiency; Energy Efficiency; Water Efficiency; Indoor Environmental Quality; and Homeowner Education. There are mandatory practices in each category that every Green Certified home must meet, and there are a wide range of additional optional practices in each category that a builder can select based on the applicability to buyers in their market. There are also mandatory point minimums in every category in order for a home to attain the next level of certification, which is a more stringent requirement than any other national certification program has.

Since the National Green Building Standard became the first and only residential green building rating system to be approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in January 2009, the NAHB Research Center has certified nearly 2,600 single-family homes, over 150 multifamily buildings representing nearly 4,700 apartments, and 17 residential land developments representing close to 1,000 lots. For more information on the Standard or the Research Center’s certification program, visit www.nahbgreen.org/Certification.

Schell Brothers is located at 55 Cascade Lane, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Chris and Preston Schell have set the standard for home building excellence, high performance features, and responsible land use in Coastal Delaware. Sussex County is a natural draw for new home buyers due to the beach environment and its ranking among the most favorable of all U.S. counties in terms of property taxes as a percentage of home value.  For more information about Schell Brothers, please visit http://www.schellbrothers.com or call 302-226-1994.

The NAHB Research Center, located in Upper Marlboro, Md., promotes innovation in housing technology to improve the quality, durability, affordability, and environmental performance of homes and home building products. Created nearly 50 years ago as a subsidiary of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the NAHB Research Center has established itself as the leading source for reliable, objective information and research on housing construction and development issues. Through its various testing and certification services, the Research Center seal is internationally recognized as a mark of product quality and an assurance of product performance. Community Receives National Recognition for Small Wonder. Big Heart.

By Schell Brothers, in All Communities

It’s that time of year! The Golden Globes, The Oscars, the SAG awards and of course the Grammys!  While these awards shows are watched on TVs across the nation, there’s one award show you won’t see on TV but, to many of us, it’s just as important – the 31st Annual National Sales and Marketing Awards!

Many of you are familiar with the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” project we were a part of back in August of 2011 and we’re excited to announce that we received an award to share with the community!  The Building Happiness: Small Wonder Big Heart project took home a Judges Special Award for Community Service in recognition of Delaware’s giving spirit.  Thousands of volunteers worked alongside our employees to accomplish one of the largest projects “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” has ever created, giving the Dunning Family the Jusst Sooup Ranch of their dreams, to continue their mission of helping those in need.  When accepting the award, Marketing Director Debby Coughlan acknowledged the generosity of the volunteer community that not only built five structures for the family, but also raised $300,000 for an endowment to help them maintain the property in the years to come.

Even though Schell Brothers handled leadership responsibilities for the build, none of it would have been possible without the help of generous sponsors and volunteers.  “Receiving the Community Spirit Award at Nationals this year wasn’t just for Schell Brothers as a company, it was for the entire community,” said owner Chris Schell.  “We had just a small part in the build; it was the sponsors and volunteers that truly made it possible.”  Coughlan agreed, and added, “The real heroes are the Dunnings, who give everything they have, day-in and day-out, to feed hungry people in our state.”

We are honored to be a part of such an amazing community that is willing to give back to each other and to people in need.  We hope you will enjoy and celebrate this special award of recognition for our community as much as we will!

Schell Brothers Team Selected to Lead Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Build in Delaware

By Schell Brothers, in Extreme

Schell Brothers, a homebuilder located in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, announced today that the company has been selected as the builder for an upcoming episode of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The build will take place in Sussex County, Delaware to benefit a local family in need who will be surprised when Ty Pennington of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition knocks on their door. Several finalists in Sussex County are being considered for the build, and one lucky family will experience a life-changing thrill when they open the door on August 22nd and a flurry of construction activity begins. Schell Brothers employees and the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team will work with community volunteers to build a dream home for the deserving family in just one week.

The project is well-suited to Schell Brothers, a unique residential construction company that has based its business strategy on building happiness and giving back to the community, making them an ideal partner for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show. In addition to homebuilding, Schell Brothers has been involved in several local charitable endeavors, including Habitat for Humanity, the Lewes Canalfront Park project, the Sussex County Land Trust, and local events to support cancer research. The company’s culture of happiness and commitment to excellence plays out in a variety of ways, most notably the happy stories employees create for each new home customer. Throughout the home buying experience, employees and homeowners develop friendships that often last long after the home is built. It will be natural for this enthusiastic team to parlay their talent, energy, and experience into creating a dream come true for a needy family.

According to company owner, Chris Schell, “We’re proud to be part of this project that will bring our whole community together to impact a local family’s life for years to come. A group of positive people all working in the same direction is an unstoppable force – this will be a memorable experience for us all.”

The public is invited to support the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition effort by attending a Pep Rally on Tuesday, August 16th at Cape Henlopen High School. Promotional items such as T-shirts that have been designed exclusively for the Delaware build will be available at a recommended donation and several fundraisers have been planned. Local Veteran Learns of Top Salesperson Honors on Veterans Day

This past Veterans Day, Dan Kauffman spent the afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery, taking part in a traditional Wetting Down Ceremony.  Uniquely designed to honor fallen soldiers, the ritual reunited Dan with comrades he met during his deployment to Iraq eight years ago during Operation Enduring Freedom.  Dan often says that his success as a new home sales manager for Schell Brothers stems from the dedication and expertise he gained from spending 13 years in the US Army Reserves.  So, it was only fitting that, when Dan returned home after a customary Veterans Day commemoration, he learned that he was one of six sales professionals nationwide to be honored as a Silver Finalist for excellence in new home sales.   Dan Kauffman is a new home sales manager for Schell Brothers at Breakwater in Lewes, Delaware.

The Community of Breakwater, Dan Kauffman, Rebecca Fluharty, The Milton at Heritage Creek

Dan’s award was one of nine Silver Nationals received by the Schell Brothers and its family of companies, including Echelon Custom Homes and Echelon Interiors.  Having received five Silver Nationals last year, Schell Brothers nearly doubled that number in 2010.  Presented by the Sales and Marketing Council of the National Homebuilders Association, Silver Nationals are handed out to the top vote recipients in several categories.  These recipients then become national finalists for the Gold Awards which will be announced and presented January 12, 2011 at the Builders Show in Orlando, Florida.   In addition to the top sales award, Schell Brothers was honored for excellence in new home product design, interior merchandising, television advertising, print/Internet marketing campaigns, and website design.  Rebecca Fluharty, a designer at Schell Brothers, received honors two years in a row for the Milton home at Heritage Creek.  Last year’s honors were for the conceptual design, while this year’s award recognized the team’s ability to bring the concept to life.  This unique Victorian home is now available to tour at the Heritage Creek community by Schell Brothers in Milton, Delaware.

Schell Brothers is located at 55 Cascade Lane, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Twin brothers Chris and Preston Schell have set the standard for home building excellence and responsible land use in Coastal  Delaware.
