Schellebrity Spotlight: The Great STEMporium

By Savanna Shackleford, in All Communities

Knock three times, and if you have curiosity, the doors just might open. Stepping through the wooden arch of The Great STEMporium doorway takes us back to when Einstein discovered the theory of relativity, or when Stephen Hawking explored the black holes of space. It feels like the movies, but makes you realize that great minds and great science don’t have to just be in the movies, they can be you.

The Great STEMporium is one of our many Schellebrity partners, eager to encourage parents to spend quality time with their kids, and for kids to explore the vast opportunities in STEM fields. Cari Miller, one of the owners and founders of the STEMporium, had a dream to open a business. Sitting down to dinner one night, she thought of the concept, ‘nourishing one’s mind.’ With that, she developed the STEMporium, a restaurant style activity center where kids, along with their parents, can ‘order’ science. Miller thought to herself, “it’s big, it’s important, and it is a gift to the kids and to society right now.”

The STEMporium engages parents and children right as they walk into the science hub. They are tasked with creating a seating chart for an awards ceremony where like-minded STEM founders must sit and discuss their work, and although she gives the kids plenty of hints, it’s a task even I struggled with! Before entering the main activity hub, the kids investigate the anatomy of their parents (with the use of technology of course), often discovering that yes, mom does have a heart!

It doesn’t end there! The kids have a myriad of options to choose from, ranging from short ‘appetizer’ activities to longer ‘entrées,’ and even some take-home ‘deserts.’ A clock that tells time with water, a cardboard oven, and a lie detector are just some examples of the wonderful imagination Cari Miller threw into the STEMporium. Each activity comes with a career card that explains what field that activity would go with, how much that position makes in the market today, a short job description, and open-ended questions parents can ask their kids to get them thinking about it.

Miller believes in the importance of STEM in the world today, and the idea that ANYONE can work in these fields if they are passionate enough about it. However, it’s also up to the parents to nurture those passions and participate in the exploration of higher learning in their young children. Something as simple as a bead necklace with colors representing binary language is a way to encourage that exploration!

If any of this sounds interesting to you, and you don’t have a child to chaperone, don’t worry! Friday nights the STEMporium hosts Sip & Science from 6pm to 9pm where adults over the age of 21 can BYOB and do some science! It’s never too late to foster your love for STEM fields! The STEMporium also offers its space for events and field trips, nurturing science through community.

Prices vary depending on the activity, so check out their website to learn more! And check out our Schellebrity website to learn more about the many opportunities we have for our homeowners. Right off of route one is a world of science and discovery ready for you to explore!

Life Without Limit

By Savanna Shackleford, in All Communities

Now that you’ve had time to browse the beautiful content in the latest issue of at HOME with Schell Brothers, we can finally talk about all those amazing features! We are beyond excited about the new content, and love seeing our beautiful communities come to life through its pages. The magazine is full of new recipes to try, tips for taking care of your courtyards, and of course highlights about our communities and homeowners. One of our biggest features talks about life without limits and shows us all the beauty that our community at The Peninsula has to offer!

The beauty of The Peninsula is what struck me the very first time I visited the community and that feeling has stayed with me every single time I drive through those gates to come home.

Barry Stiefel, Peninsula Homeowner

A master-planned community has a certain feel to it. It’s hard to define, but you know it the second you drive past the glistening water fountains and gated entrance. You know it when your head swivels back and forth in an attempt to take in the beauty and grandeur before you. You realize that your first thought was, ‘where has this oasis been hiding?!’ This is precisely what happens when you drive through the notably impressive entrance of The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay in Millsboro, Delaware. Not at all what you would expect to find, but, oh boy is it exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Homeowners at The Peninsula are proud, and rightfully so. They’ve hit the jackpot after all, with a community artfully positioned so that you’re far enough removed from the daily grind…but close enough to access all you need. Just a few hours’ drive from the East Coast’s big cities, and only a short drive from the famed Delaware Beaches, you truly get the best of both worlds. Even better is the fact that just steps from your front door is a seemingly never-ending list of amenities.

Indoor and outdoor pools, athletic club, Jack Nicklaus golf course, award-winning clubhouse, spa, nature trail, private beach, tennis, pickleball, kids’ activities center, wave pool…seriously, the list is never-ending.

But as the saying goes, ‘there’s no place like home,’ which is why the homes are the heart of this Sussex Community of the Year. For starters, the options are varied, with floor plans ranging from low-maintenance townhomes, to right-sized ranch homes fit for families and retirees, right on up to the large-scale homes that meet the needs of avid entertainers with a bevy of out of town guests to accommodate. The curb appeal is unparalleled, as are the homeowners residing within. This is a group who knows how to live life to the fullest, relax in style, and LOVE where they live.

We have everything within our gates…from our restaurant, athletic center, pools, walking trails and beaches to our fabulous golf course! We never want to leave!

Nick Karbonik, Peninsula Homeowner

According to Community Sales Associate Kathryn Hanlon, what sets The Peninsula apart are (of course) the unique amenities, but also its member involvement. “The Peninsula is one of those communities where people are not only looking for a new home, but also a lifestyle to go along with it,” she explained. “The amenities are spectacular, and create a resort-like atmosphere. There is truly something for everyone, but especially for those looking to unwind and take a little time to enjoy the finer things in life.”

4 Things to do on a Rainy Day in Your Schell Home

By Savanna Shackleford, in All Communities

It’s raining, it’s pouring, and you’re so bored you’re snoring. In fact, you were really hoping to hit the sand first thing and watch the sunrise, but now you can’t leave the house. Finding that perfect rainy-day activity isn’t always easy, especially when you live so close to such amazing outdoor adventures! Lucky for you, you live in a Schell home!

Give yourself the opportunity to kick-back and relax, because when do you ever get time to relax? Throw on your comfiest pair of pajamas or your fuzziest socks, and enjoy some popcorn and a movie, bake some cookies, or read those books you’ve been meaning to pick up and enjoy. Relaxing doesn’t always have to be a chore! And don’t you worry, the sun will come out tomorrow (maybe).

Bake Cookies

A freshly oven-baked cookie straight from your kitchen is the perfect way to warm up your rainy-day blues. How could you not crave those gooey chocolate chunks and that crumbling dough? Whether you dip them in a glass of milk or add some Nutella to top them off, cookies are sure to bring a smile to your face while you weather the storm. Cookies aren’t your thing? Standing by the warm oven wrapped in a freshly cleaned blanket can be just as satisfying!

Make Your Own Film Festival

I don’t know about you, but movies are my favorite, and rainy days are the perfect excuse to sit down on the couch and not get up for hours! Jazz it up with some movie trivia and popcorn. Enjoy the free time while it lasts! You can binge the latest Netflix arrival, get into that movie trilogy you’ve been meaning to watch, or maybe you want to view an oldie but a goodie, either way, this activity is perfect for any family. There’s no need to leave your basement (except maybe for some of those cookies)!

Indoor Games

Game night is the way to GO on a rainy afternoon, just cross your fingers you pull that get out of jail free card! If you’re sick of all the usual games, try some throwbacks like Twister, Parcheesi or Charades. It might be better to go chord-free anyway, just in case the power goes out! This option allows you to enjoy your great room with family, and have a few laughs when dad is acting like a monkey in charades and when mom falls playing twister. It’s totally possible to smile in the rain!

Spa Day

Although you stayed inside to avoid the water, taking a nice long bath in your own private spa is sometimes just what you need to relax. Put on some good music, light a candle, and remember to give yourself some alone time. At Schell, we pride ourselves in promoting a lifestyle of happiness. A day of self-care and relaxation can really boost your esteem!

Don’t let the weather rain on your parade, take a minute to do something fun indoors. As long as you are safe inside your home, like an umbrella, we’ve got you covered!

Keeping Up With the Kudos Bus

By Savanna Shackleford, in All Communities

Receiving a compliment or praise, whether from a coworker or a complete stranger, gives us all that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Our Kudos Bus and the Schell team are working hard to spread that feeling all over Southern Delaware!

At local restaurants and summer events, it’s not hard to spot happiness exuding from those visiting the bus. The Kudos team has been making their way to businesses all across the Rehoboth, Lewes and Bethany areas, in an effort to spread the word…kudos for everyone! Keep an eye out for our bright pink and orange awning and the Project Kudos logo so you can start giving out some kudos of your own!

Pick a place and time on our website, projectkudos.com, and come out and join the fun! You can grab a Kudos sticker (or several!), write Kudos to someone you’re especially grateful for, and then stick it on the bus for everyone to see! It’s the perfect way to brighten your day, take your kids out for a fun time and, of course, collect some awesome swag in the process! And take as many stickers as you’d like for the road – we challenge you to spread that positivity wherever you can!

As the wheels on the bus keep turning, it’s fun to look back at some of our favorite moments on the journey so far.

The Kudos Bus made its way to Freeman Stage just last week, embarking on its first trip to a concert venue hosting a Billy Joel cover band. The atmosphere was already so lively, and the bus just added to the excitement of the evening! Over a hundred girls and boys gave kudos and fulfilled the goal of our mission – to spread good vibes – all the while dancing the night away!

Keep an eye out for a return trip to The Boys and Girls Club of Rehoboth Beach because our on-site Project Kudos Rep, Shyaira, definitely wants to make it back there. From the awesome energy to the big, bright smiles, Shyaira says there is no better place to find a crowd full of positivity! “The Boys and Girls Club was so awesome because the kids were just funny and so lively. They put on their Kudos sunglasses and jammed out to Old Town Road like a billion times!”

The bus, although not rusty in the slightest, ended up at the Rusty Rudder this past month too. Our visitors got really into it at this stop, spending a lot of time on the bus itself talking and getting to know one another. That is a huge part of our mission, strangers meeting strangers and becoming friends. It was awesome to see people from all over the country interested in the Kudos Bus and our movement of gratitude and positivity!

So if that didn’t convince you, perhaps spotting the bus driving down Route One or trying a sip of our Project Kudos beer (brewed by our friends at Crooked Hammock) will get your wheels turning. Check out our website for a detailed list of all the stops, and like us on Instagram and Facebook to stay in the loop!
