The Cape Henlopen State Park is the most well-known state park in Sussex County, but it isn’t the only wonderful area to explore here! My family and I visited Holts Landing State Park on a sunny late-March day.
Tucked along the Indian River Bay, this 203-acre state park is packed with activities. You can easily stroll along the bay and launch a kayak or boat from inside the park. Several trails meander from water views to woods. On this day, we chose to hike the accessible ADA Seahawk Trail. It spans over wetlands and then guides you through beautiful woods with plenty of wildlife. Along the way, we spotted many turtles and a harmless snake! We identified soaring Eastern White Pines, White and Red Oaks, and many American Red Cedar trees. It was a fantastic walk, perfect for small children or older adults. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in nature for the day.
After our hike, we enjoyed looking over the bay on the fishing pier. You can experience beautiful views of the Indian River Bay. But please note that if you want to fish, you need a license!
There are also pavilions, plenty of picnic tables, a grill for family picnics, and an oversized firepit perfect for making smores! If you are adventuresome, there are primitive campsites available to rent during the summer.
If you have young kids, there is a small playground for them to enjoy. There are also plenty of benches in the park that provide gorgeous scenery and views.
Overall, this DE State Park is a hidden gem worth exploring!
And the best part, Schell Brothers’ single-family home community Marlin Chase is just 6 miles from this DE State Park. This state park is just one of the many things that make coastal Delaware a fantastic place to call home!

|Comments Off on Privacy & Peacefulness In A Small Setting
When I moved west of Route One, my family (maybe myself included) was worried. True, we were moving into a beautiful new home, but we were moving farther away from our beloved Rehoboth Beach and our favorite haunts! I assured my three girls it would be fine, but I wasn’t sure myself.
We would zip downtown Rehoboth for dinner, walks, and shopping with ease. Now we were fifteen minutes away. That might seem like nothing to many of you, but we had ten years of history being just a short bike ride to the beach.
I smiled and promised it would be fun! And guess what? It didn’t take long for us to adapt and find new favorite spots that were less crowded and easy to access. The best part was that we still went to Rehoboth and now even Lewes very quickly whenever we felt like something different.
I love a good happy hour so finding a spot close to home was imperative! JD Shuckers fit the bill for a fantastic happy hour. On any given night, Teresa, Joey, Jamie, James, or Tommy will serve up the best drinks and a little bit of great conversation. But what I wasn’t expecting was their great food! We have fun family dinners there frequently where there is something for everyone. Most nights, “Sweeney” is producing items from their well-stocked raw bar; their fish tacos are probably my favorite in the area, and my family loves Monday night burger night!
We spent lots of breakfasts here when we lived in Rehoboth, so when they opened right around the corner, the whole family was thrilled! From their healthy smoothies to some of our favorite lunch specials, Green Man is a healthy alternative that provides some delicious menu items. My favorites are Chopped Chickpea Salad and the Green Goddess sandwich!
This family favorite has everything from white pizzas to classic Neapolitan pizzas to a delicious eggplant parmesan sandwich! Friday nights aren’t complete without a great dinner from Amore! Eat-in, take out, and even get delivery (west of Route One of course).
If you need any quick grocery supplies, stop at the General Store for last-minute items or get a prepared sandwich to go! Their subs and seafood sandwiches are unexpectedly delicious. A local secret: the back refrigerator case contains homemade sauce and fresh-made local pasta, including our favorite stuffed shells! This serves as a great last-minute homemade dinner sure to wow family and guests.
I would always advocate for the interesting local spots first! But with three teenage girls in the house, sometimes we need nail polish remover, shampoo, or other essential items! The Dollar General is a quick stop that provides grocery and beauty items in a bind.
The thing I learned about living west of Route One is it is pretty great! There are so many things right at your fingertips, including easy shopping, restaurants, and activities like kayaking on Love Creek and hiking on the trail accessed at Dairy Farm Road.
Schell Brother’s newest community has the best of both worlds. Tucked off Angola Road, Hailey’s Glen offers you all the privacy and peacefulness you need, this single-family home community is just ten minutes’ drive to the beautiful coastal Delaware beaches but also very close to all the favorite hidden treasures in Lewes.
We still go to Rehoboth all the time. Honestly, the drive is short and does not bother us at all, but we are away from the hustle and bustle and summer traffic! We love living here.

|Comments Off on It’s the little things that make life better
If you are like most people, you realize that often times the little things in life are what really makes your day better! So, we got to thinking, what are the little things that make our Schell Brothers homes special? Most of you already know our homes have incredible curb appeal, are extremely energy-efficient and have open floor plans with lots of natural light, but what you may not know is that we have a plethora of little details that you can add to make your home that much better. With that in mind, we decided to create a list of some of our favorite and unexpected things that can be included in your Schell home, and will make your life, well, just better.
Pot fillers. These little gems make boiling water just plain easy. You don’t have to jostle back and forth from sink to stove top, and you can easily keep your eye on everything that is for dinner. So, get the spaghetti ready and cook away.
Reading nooks. Some of our floor plans offer built-ins on the landing of the staircase. This is the perfect place to relax and curl up with your favorite book. Grab your fluffiest blanket and that book you have been dying to read and enjoy.
Dog-washing stations. As you may know at Schell, we love our furry four-legged friends just as much as our homeowners. With our pets in mind, we added a dog-washing station to our selection lineup to the delight of pets everywhere. Woof, woof!
Wet bars. If you have ever been in a home with a wet bar, you know how fantastic they are. They provide extra storage for all your wine, a place to showcase your favorite glasses and they create a pretty cool gathering spot for you and your guests.
His and her closets. If you are like me, you need plenty of space for all of your shoes, clothing and jewelry and usually your husband is completely out of luck and his things are banished to the back edge of your owners’ suite closet. Well in a Schell Brothers home, you are both in luck! Most of our floor plans have his and hers walk-in closets. So, no more fighting for hanger space, there is plenty of room for both of you.
Solar power. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint, and almost stamp out your electric bills, solar energy is for you. Our sister company, Clean Energy, offers solar panels in almost all of our communities in coastal Delaware. Even better, you are able to roll the cost of solar into your mortgage!
At Schell, we have thousands of options that allow you to personalize your home so you have exactly what you want and need. Want to learn more? Explore or Online Design Studio and dare to dream. https://schellbrothers.com/design/

|Comments Off on Get Your Schell Home Ready for the Holidays!
The holidays are finally here! And prepping for all your guests can get a bit stressful. Thankfully, we are here to help make your Schell home fresh and festive for the holiday season, so you can get back to what matters most: enjoying time with your family and friends.
Make a Game Plan
Life is so much easier when you have a plan, and the holidays sure warrant one. Here at Schell, we love To Do lists. They help keep you on task and even better, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment when you cross a Holiday To Do off your list!
Get Ready for Overnight Guests
If your house is anything like ours, the holidays equal plenty of sleepovers! Whether it is your parents, children, grandkids or best friend, why not get your home guest-ready early? Everyone loves some good soap and hand lotion (even the men in your life; they just may not admit it), so load up your guest bath with lots of guest-sized goodies. Get your beds ready with clean sheets and plenty of warm blankets. While you’re at it, throw a few magazines on the nightstand and make sure a phone charger is nearby. All of these little details will make your guests feel right at home!
Decorate the Right Spaces
Get out your festive decor and make sure all of your main living spaces feel like the holidays! Light seasonal candles, hang a cheery sign or two, and put the stockings on the mantle. Adorn your front door with a beautiful wreath. But don’t sweat the small stuff; your guests won’t notice the cookie crumbs on the floor because they are at your house to see you.
Entertain the Easy Way
Let’s face it; it’s 2019 and life is fast-paced, so keep things easy during the holidays. Host a gathering where you don’t have to provide all of the food yourself. Invite friends over for a wine tasting where everyone brings a bottle, have a cookie exchange, or throw a pot-luck party. You’ll still be having fun with friends, sans spending two days prepping in the kitchen.
No matter how you plan to spend this holiday season, remember to breathe, celebrate and enjoy!

|Comments Off on Local Favorites: Yellowfin’s Bar & Grill
Yellowfin’s Bar & Grill, conveniently located off of John J. Williams Highway, is the best new restaurant to try in the Long Neck area if you’re looking for tasty appetizers and entrees in a casual yet upbeat atmosphere. This unexpectedly cool spot is directly behind the recently constructed Wawa in a strip center full of cute shops that have just opened or are slated to open prior to Summer 2019.
Immediately upon entering, you’ll notice a hometown vibe with locals lingering at the bar and a fairly full restaurant, even on a Tuesday in January. The large bar is accented with a rustic theme, highlighted by a shiplap wall covered with a great selection of liquor, wine, beer and plenty of TV’s that will delight any sports fan. The extremely friendly manager, Brad, let me in on the fact that they turn the volume up in the bar area during important games. (Hint, hint: visit them for the Super Bowl and March Madness.)
The well-appointed bar
Yellowfin’s offers an impressive drink menu with plenty of interesting mixed drinks and ample options for wine and beer lovers alike. The Tuna Nachos are a highlight and evidently a favorite of both staff and visitors. The flaky and light wonton nacho is the perfect staple for the slightly spicy ahi tuna and seaweed. I personally loved this appetizer and so did my husband! We opted to try several items from the Happy Hour Menu, all under $7. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the Boneless Wings, and who doesn’t love Fried Spicy Cheese Curds and Fried Pickles with Sweet Thai Chili Sauce?
After that we were completely stuffed, but my hubby managed to enjoy Burger Night and opted for the locally farmed burger topped with a fried egg and onion frizzles.
Tuna Nachos
Durning the summer months, guests can enjoy outdoor seating and live music on the patio. Yellowfin’s offers nightly specials year-round, including Monday Trivia and Pasta (a crowd favorite, so get there early if you plan on going and be ready for a lively game of trivia).
Brad informed me that their laid-back attitude applies to the hours as well. They stop serving food at ten nightly; but if there is a bar crowd at that time, they’ll gladly stay open to serve their guests.
Although Yellowfin’s just opened in April of 2018, the atmosphere, food quality and service make it seem as though they have been open for years! Yellowfin’s Bar & Grill is a hidden gem in Long Neck that won’t be hidden for long.
