Meet Pixstar!

By Erin Lee, in Extreme Sponsors

The response of the local business community in providing monetary support of the Sussex County Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project, has been overwhelming. Pixstar, Inc., of Lewes, Delaware rose to the challenge, and donated $10,000. This extreme support, combined with other donations, will help local residents Dale and Ken Dunning, realize their dream of continuing and growing Jusst Sooup, their grassroots ministry which provides food, clothing, and often, even shelter to those in need.

“The producers of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition have touched a large number of people with the program, with the choice of families that the program supports and with the choice of communities in which they produce each episode,” says George Reissig, President and CEO of Pixstar, Inc. “They’ve created a show with substance, and broad appeal,” George adds.
Pixstar is an IT consulting firm specializing in Business Intelligence (BI) and Information Architecture (IA). One of their three guiding principles is to contribute to the virtual and local communities that we inhabit.
“We were very pleased to support this project because it is a commendable undertaking in our local community. Pixstar sees this project as one that doesn’t just build a home. It builds community through the involvement of so many individuals, businesses and organizations,” says George.
In further support of their mission, Pixstar supports the Children’s Beach House in Lewes, the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula and Public Radio Delmarva. George serves as a vice-chairman on the board of directors of Food Bank of Delaware, which received over 1700 pounds of food donations at last week’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition pep rally at Cape Henlopen High School. George was also appointed by Gov. Markell to the Delaware STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education  Council, where he chairs the Communication and Collaboration Committee.
Pixstar provides IT consulting services, primarily to the Federal Government. “Although much of our work and customers are outside of Delaware, our headquarters is in Lewes and most of our employees live nearby, explaining our interest in the well being of our community,” says George.
We are grateful to Pixstar for their support of this community project! For more information about Pixstar, Inc., and the services they offer, visit www.pixstar.com.

Braveheart March!

By Erin Lee, in Extreme

At 9:30 Monday morning, energetic volunteers were already lining up at the registration tent located at Cape Henlopen High School. Many had driven several hours to get here, changed schedules, or called off work – for the chance to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The parking lot was full of people texting and calling friends and family, sharing any bits of information they had learned talking to others. Schell Brothers employees and volunteers were at the ready – collecting registration forms, handing out t-shirts and hard hats, and trying their best to answer questions.

There was a buzz in the air, nervous excitement – everyone was ready for this big day of… of what? No one was quite sure what to expect.
Some were asking, “do we know who the family is, yet?” “Do we know how far away the house is?” Others were offering guesses. “There’s a house down the road from mine that’s had strange trucks parked out front all last week…”  Speculation was a great way to pass the time.
School buses sat idling as more and more volunteers arrived. Finally, at 10:15, to the sounds of cheers and applause, the first volunteer-loaded bus began its trip to the build site. A few minutes passed. The second bus drove away. And finally the third. In just minutes, we would all discover where the build would take place, and where we would be offering our time and efforts to help a family in our community realize their biggest dream.
When we got to the site, there was a bit of confusion over which home was to be demolished. Once again, speculation took over. “I don’t think they live here,” remarked one person. “I don’t think anyone lives here,” said another. However, all speculation was quickly put aside.
An announcement came that it was time for group pictures, a bit of instruction from the production team, and a short wait before the march. Following a few photos, the anticipation grew and grew and grew, until it was announced that we were moving into position! We were all so ready for this!

However, that plan quickly changed, and it was announced that pizza was on the way, instead. When the pizza arrived, we all paraded down the street to another location, where after being told to eat quickly, we were told to get in position for the march! It was finally time! The Schell Brothers banner was unrolled and held in position at the front of our large gathering of volunteers. The energy was palpable!  But, once again, we were told it would be a bit longer.
You can imagine the excitement when the final announcement came that the family was indeed on their way, and we were to get in position – at our original location.
It was actually a lot of fun. The uncertainty of everything, although it required some walking, and waiting, just helped build even more curiosity and excitement over what was coming. The family would be brought to the site of their new home, led down the property a bit, and told that a lot of folks wanted to help them realize their dream. Then, we would come dashing out of a nearby tree line, shouting and cheering and waving, ultimately encircling the family and the design team, and yes, Ty Pennington, too! Yes! It was time!
We came charging out of the tree line. We encircled the team. We cheered! We waved! We had energy!! Ty talked to the family. Ty talked to Chris Schell. Chris talked to the family. We got kudos from the director! We cheered and applauded and waved just like we were supposed to! We all remembered to smile, and cheered and applauded and waved some more!

And then it was over.
The director thanked us, and of course said that people in Delaware were among the best “cheerers” he had ever met. Aw shucks. I bet he tells everyone that.
It was really an amazing time. Feeling the energy build. Hearing people’s stories and motivations behind volunteering. Watching the production team rushing around getting things ready.
What a great way to show the family how much we want to be involved in their dream. What a great beginning to our build week.

Be Proud, Sussex County

We are so proud that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has chosen to come to Sussex County to work their magic and involve our community!

When asked by the Extreme Makeover team whether Sussex County would be able to provide the massive numbers of volunteers needed to make this project a reality, Schell Brothers owner Chris Schell had only to think of why he has such great affection for this area. “It’s not the beach, it’s not the quaint little towns, it’s not The Outlets. It’s the people! The people here are amazing!” he said to a roaring crowd at Tuesday night’s Pep Rally. With thousands of volunteers at the ready, Chris’ confidence in his community to step up to the challenge and get involved was well founded. “This is not the Schell Brothers build. This is the community build,” said Chris.
Now that the volunteers are assembled, and the builder is selected, we know the dream of building a house for a deserving family is about to happen. We know that it will be beautiful, fully decorated, fully furnished, and fully outfitted to improve the quality of life for the family who will call it home. But, where does the money to make this dream a reality come from?
Charitable Donations
All t-shirt sales and donated money heads straight for the Sussex County Family Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit fund established specifically for this build project and the family. The fund is managed by the Greater Lewes Foundation.
Food donations from attendees were collected upon entry into the Pep Rally Tuesday night. These donations will stock the Food Bank of Delaware. 1,630 pounds of non-perishable food was collected and sent by van to the Food Bank after last night’s events – and remarkably, not all of the donated food would fit in one van-load! So, a final weight of all collected food has yet to be determined.
A huge thank you goes out to Bank of Delmarva for handling the t-shirt sales – all attendees kept them very, very (read: exceptionally!) busy with their generous support of Extreme Makeover’s latest project.
Between the Pep Rally and the benefit concert that followed, Tuesday’s event successfully raised around $20,000, pushing the total of all moneys collected for Sussex County’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition build upward approaching $200,000.
And that’s something all of the amazing people of Sussex County can be very proud of!

Extreme Concert At Cape Henlopen High School!

By Erin Lee, in Extreme

Who would think that two little girls tap dancing to Disney’s “Tail Spin” would be a part of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition‘s latest project? Abigail Cowan and Bailey Larmore, dancers with Delaware Arts Conservatory won the audience over with their contagious smiles and enthusiastic tap performance, proof that even the smallest among us have talents that can be shared to accomplish great things.

As sweet as these two were, all of the performers deserve major kudos for volunteering their talents to last night’s benefit concert which followed Extreme Makeover: Home Edition‘s kick-off Pep Rally in Lewes, Delaware.
Several performances were particularly notable, however, for their relevance to EMHE’s mission of reaching out to help others through volunteerism and a steward-like sense of community. Jerry Birl, a self-professed “Fan-ilow,” performed Barry Manilow’s inspiring song “Help is On The Way,” and dancers from Vineland Regional Dance Company treated us to a portion of “Shine,” choreographed by the late Jonathan Phelps, that reminds us, “We’re all meant to shine.”
Sussex County certainly shines in their fundraising efforts! Proceeds from both events garnered about $20,000, pushing the current fundraising total over $150,000 in donations from the community. Charged with the mission of organizing local talent into an evening of high-end entertainment, Director Autumn Schneider rose to the occasion, assembling a variety show of dedicated, passionate artists, willing to share what they could in the name of community. “When Schell Brothers contacted me regarding this project, I was honored that they felt I could be counted on to help achieve such an admirable objective. Of course, simply put, I could not do it alone. This has truly been an overall team effort.”
This is an ever-present theme of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition projects. Every person, no matter how big or small, can make a difference by offering their time, talent, or treasure. We can all be heroes, just for one day, and our involvement will have lasting effects on those we share it with.

Beebe Medical Center’s “Extreme” Support of the Community

By Erin Lee, in Extreme Sponsors

The folks at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware know a thing or two about community involvement. This non profit community hospital, founded in 1916 coordinates several health-related annual community events, including American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and Heart Ball, and the American Diabetes Association’s Walk for Diabetes, enlisting the support and involvement of the community in the process.

Beebe’s generous $10,000 sponsorship of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition‘s Sussex County project is no exception. “We just love the concept of the whole thing,” says Nancy Cummings, Public Relations Coordinator for Beebe Medical Center. Nancy believes that a healthy home is an important aspect of our overall health. “A sick home won’t help you get better,” says Nancy.  The work done by Extreme Makeover Home Edition and its many volunteers will help to improve the total health of a deserving family in Sussex County.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition selects families who are deeply committed to community causes, despite difficult circumstances the family may face. The homes built by EMHE drastically improve their quality of life and ability to continue helping in their communities. “These people are heroes,” says Senior Producer Milan Vasic.  At last night’s Extreme Makeover Pep Rally at Cape Henlopen High School, the crowds were reminded that everyone has the opportunity to be a hero, by becoming involved and lending their unique talents to a project that can make a difference. “Just look at the energy here! It’s an opportunity to get involved in the community,” says Nancy.
Beebe Medical’s commitment to the community can be seen not only in their “extreme” support and sponsorship of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition‘s Sussex County build, but also in their vast health care offerings. Specialized hospital services include oncology, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and women’s health. In addition, Beebe Medical Center operates several off-campus facilities, including Beebe Lab Express, Wound Care and Diabetes Management Services, Sleep Disorders Center, Millville Emergency Center, Home Health Agency, Gull House Adult Activities Center, a Nursing School, and lab services throughout Sussex County. Their Department of Integrative Health offers life enhancement programs to help people manage stress and improve their overall health.
