As locals to Southern Delaware, spouting off reasons to live near the beach is a breeze, but it’s more than just the free access to pristine beaches that make us fall in love with our local area time and time again, year after year. An endless array of outdoor adventures and countless options for fresh, local cuisine are just a few of the reasons we LOVE calling Southern Delaware home. Let’s take a look:
Outdoor Adventures
Delaware is an attractive state for the outdoor adventurer, with the proximity to the beach serving as the icing on the cake. Of course the local state parks (several of which are beachfront) further sweeten the deal. Throw in surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, and parasailing to the mix and you’ve got yourself an outdoor enthusiasts dream world.
Local Flavor
The Delaware beaches are home to some of the best restaurants in the Mid-Atlantic region, with a running list of awards and accolades to boot (including James Beard nominees and winners!). Take an Eating Rehoboth Tour to get a wide sampling of flavors, or slowly eat your way through all of the local restaurants in Fenwick Island, Bethany Beach, and Rehoboth.
Travel Back in Time
Beach time and a history lesson may not seem like a natural fit, but at our local beaches, they make a pretty perfect pair! Southern Delaware is home to 26 museums, with military history, natural history, and Native American history serving as just a few of the areas of historical interest for locals and visitors alike to enjoy. Take time to stop by the Indian River Lifesaving Station Museum to learn about the heroes who risked their lives along our coast, or dedicate an afternoon to learning about the lighthouses that line our beaches.
Tax-Free Shopping
It goes without saying that shopping is unparalleled here at the beach thanks to the tax-free shopping in Delaware. Between the local shops in Fenwick, Bethany, Lewes, and Rehoboth, and the name brands at the Tanger Outlets, taking a break from the beach to enjoy shopping has never seemed like a better idea!
Summer Staples
It’s not a trip to the beach without a few hours of reveling in all of your favorite summer staples. Taking an evening stroll along the boardwalk, enjoying a few games of skeeball at Funland, or noshing on some Dolle’s popcorn or Grotto’s Pizza are just a few of the summertime favorites that turn into lasting memories.
