The folks at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware know a thing or two about community involvement. This non profit community hospital, founded in 1916 coordinates several health-related annual community events, including American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and Heart Ball, and the American Diabetes Association’s Walk for Diabetes, enlisting the support and involvement of the community in the process.
Beebe’s generous $10,000 sponsorship of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition‘s Sussex County project is no exception. “We just love the concept of the whole thing,” says Nancy Cummings, Public Relations Coordinator for Beebe Medical Center. Nancy believes that a healthy home is an important aspect of our overall health. “A sick home won’t help you get better,” says Nancy. The work done by Extreme Makeover Home Edition and its many volunteers will help to improve the total health of a deserving family in Sussex County.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition selects families who are deeply committed to community causes, despite difficult circumstances the family may face. The homes built by EMHE drastically improve their quality of life and ability to continue helping in their communities. “These people are heroes,” says Senior Producer Milan Vasic. At last night’s Extreme Makeover Pep Rally at Cape Henlopen High School, the crowds were reminded that everyone has the opportunity to be a hero, by becoming involved and lending their unique talents to a project that can make a difference. “Just look at the energy here! It’s an opportunity to get involved in the community,” says Nancy.
Beebe Medical’s commitment to the community can be seen not only in their “extreme” support and sponsorship of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition‘s Sussex County build, but also in their vast health care offerings. Specialized hospital services include oncology, cardiovascular, orthopedics, and women’s health. In addition, Beebe Medical Center operates several off-campus facilities, including Beebe Lab Express, Wound Care and Diabetes Management Services, Sleep Disorders Center, Millville Emergency Center, Home Health Agency, Gull House Adult Activities Center, a Nursing School, and lab services throughout Sussex County. Their Department of Integrative Health offers life enhancement programs to help people manage stress and improve their overall health.
